ABC National Newspaper Round-Up: June 2011
The Daily National newspaper market saw a return to the norm after last months slight increase of 0.1%, as the Total Daily market fell 0.9% PoP. There were notable PoP increases for two publications in the Sunday Newspaper market, while the Mail on Sunday gained a YoY increase of 1.0% as it’s rivals saw YoY losses across the board.
With the continued overall decline of the Daily Newspaper market there were some fighters. Independent’s ‘i‘ newspaper once again increased PoP with a consistent gain of 6,000 copies between May and June 11. Both the Daily Mirror and Daily Star can also puff out their tabloid chests and boast PoP increases.
The News of the World can take a teary eyed look at their last full ABC audit. As today’s news sees one red top falling; her recently much criticised and since ceased Sunday tabloid saw a PoP increase of over 10,000 copies.

Quality Daily Titles
- Independent’s spin off ‘i‘ was the only Quality Daily to post a PoP increase in Jun 11, circulating an extra 6,000 copies for the second consecutive month
- The remaining five quality titles posted consistent PoP and YoY declines
- Year on Year the Times saw the biggest decline at 12.5% closely followed by The Guardian’s 10.5% fall
- The Daily Telegraph remains the most-circulated quality title with a total of 622,719 copies
Mid-Market Daily Titles
- The Daily Mail sees a loss of over 45,000 copies compared to this time last year, while feeling a small hit of -0.5% PoP
- The Daily Express finds itself losing just under 10,000 copies PoP with a decrease of 6.4% YoY
Popular Daily Titles
- The Daily Star and the Daily Mirror were the only winners in the Tabloid market – both up PoP respectively
- The Sun continues as the country’s most popular tabloid even though showing a slight decline PoP and YoY
- The whole Popular category saw YoY declines with the Daily Star coming off worst losing 12.6%
Sunday Newspaper Market
The Sunday Newspaper Market saw an overall small PoP decline of 0.8% but a consistent YoY fall of over 5%.
The Sunday Mirror, News of the World, Mail on Sunday and Independent on Sunday held up well with small PoP increases all round.

Quality Sunday Titles
- The Independent on Sunday posted an increase of just 17 copies compared to May 11, however this does make it the only title increase in the Quality sector
- Th Observer saw the biggest YoY decline with a 11.6% fall over the year.
- The Sunday Times sees the largest actual change in copies losing over 80,000 YoY and almost 50,000 PoP
Mid-Market Sunday Titles
- The Mail on Sunday saw its circulation grow between May and June 2011 with circulation up over 9,000 copies and an against the grain YoY increase of 0.5%
- The Sunday Express recorded a 4.2% PoP drop and a 4.8% fall YoY
- Two titles in the Sunday red-top market enjoyed a boost in circulation numbers – the News of the World and the Sunday Mirror
- The News of the World increased its total by more than 10,000 after a 0.4% PoP rise
- The Daily Star Sunday saw the biggest YoY decline in the Sunday Tabloid sector, losing over 46,000 copies (13.1%) in the past year.
