ABC national newspaper round-up: June 2013

The latest ABC figures show that the Daily, Free and Sunday markets were all down overall, both period on period (PoP) and year on year (YoY), with the biggest PoP change belonging to the Sunday Post (5.1%).

Daily titles

In the quality market, the biggest PoP increase belonged to the Financial Times at just 0.7%, while the Guardian, ‘i’, Independent and the Times all experienced losses.

Despite a PoP decrease of -1.2%, ‘i’ was up 11.2% YoY – the only title to see any yearly growth at all.

The mid market titles didn’t fare much better, with the Daily Express seeing a -0.6% PoP loss and a -13.3% YoY loss. Despite the huge digital popularity recorded in May’s online ABC report, the Daily Mail was up just 1.1% from May, and dropped by 133,000 in circulation across the year.

In the popular market, the Daily Star was up in circulation by just over 6,000 across June, while all other titles experienced circulation decreases. The Sun took the biggest hit, losing 25,332 PoP.

Overall, the Dailies were down -0.2% PoP and -9% YoY.

London Free Press

City A.M. was the only title to see any period growth at all at 0.1% – a circulation increase equivalent of 169. Metro (London) suffered the most out of all three titles in June, though its circulation fell by just 3,188.

The titles were down -0.3% PoP and -0.6% YoY overall.

Sunday titles

Few titles in the Sunday market reported any circulation growth across June, however the Sunday Post was up 5.1% – the biggest increase across all three markets – followed by the Daily Star Sunday, up 1.9%.

The Mail on Sunday took the biggest hit – with circulation down just over 42,000 (-2.5%).

All titles were down across the yearly period, with the Sun (Sunday) losing 314,704, followed by the Mail on Sunday (186,344).

Overall, the Sunday titles were down 0.4% PoP and -11.6% YoY, surpassing the million mark in terms of circulation loss.
