Despite a slight fall in users over the month of October, Guardian.co.uk remained more popular than its rivals. According to figures released by ABC, the website was the most visited national newspaper site for the second month in a row.
The site has seen an uncertain few months with users flocking to Mail Online, landing the Associated News website in the number one position from June to August. However, September marked Guardian.co.uk’s jump back to the top as it broke past the 30 million unique user mark. Even though it lost nearly 1.3 million users over October the website still saw a YOY increase of 22%.
Mail Online gained 400,000 users pushing it up to second place in the audited national websites rankings. The Daily Mail site fell down to third in September but seems to be gaining traction once more. Still keeping its head above the 30 million-user mark, ABC also reports a YOY rise of 43.6%.
The last of the websites to garner 30 million users, Telegraph.co.uk, lost just over one million in October. This was enough to let Mail Online slip past and send the Telegraph Media site into third. It has been a great few months for the website though, with a huge spike in visits since August of this year.

Maybe it was Rupert Murdoch’s promise of an imminent paid-for model across all of News Corp sites but October saw distinct changes in both audited sites. Sun Online saw a drop of over 2 million unique users and Times Online saw growth of nearly the same amount. These fluctuations didn’t affect their ranking, however, keeping them in fourth and fifth place respectively. Times Online has been hovering around the 20 million mark since August 2008. In a twelve month period that saw many of the national websites explode in popularity, Times Online has reported a slight YOY increase of 1.9%.
There was good news for Mirror Digital Group, with an increase in traffic of 1.2 million users. This is the second highest figure it has reported since it first released an ABC figure in March 08.
Over a million new users visited the Independent website over October, bringing the total figure to 9.7 million.
