In 1990 the combined billings of all IPA agencies was £4.06bn, while combined net profits totalled £50m; in 1991, the average net profitability of the advertising sector was only 1.55% of billing. The findings come from a new IPA report entitled “Rewarding the Advertising Profession”.
Advertising professionals are paid a substantial amount less than their equivalents in the other professions. The average advertising employee earns £24,830.
The report says that the number of agencies belonging to the IPA has fallen from 275 to 245 in the last two years, with staff down to 13,000 from 15,400. Budgets have fallen by 19% over the last two years.
