The BBC and the RadioCentre are planning to launch a new website that could see all radio stations in Britain become available online by the end of the year.
The BBC and senior members of the commercial radio trade body are currently in talks to develop a system, which they hope will be ready before Christmas, according to reports.
If the development, testing and roll-out goes to plan, the public will be able to access the website by early next year.
Tim Davie, the director of BBC Audio and Music, said there was a sense of urgency surrounding the venture because radio is being left behind as consumers continue to download music from the internet for free.
