Another record month for BBC iPlayer in February

The BBC iPlayer had a record 3.5 million programme requests per day across all platforms in February, with a total of 116 million requests across the whole month.

The week of 15-21 February was the strongest on record, driven by the live episode of EastEnders, the BBC said.

Requests from Nintendo Wii consoles also increased, making up 5% of TV requests, with iPhones now matching this figure.

As reported in previous months, the majority of iPlayer users are under-55 years old, which is younger than the typical TV viewer or radio listener’s profile.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Google is trialling a new television search service which will allow users to find TV shows and online videos via a set-top box.

According to the report, viewers can use a keyboard to type queries, with Google hoping to partner the service with its new TV advertising brokering business, which will allow it to target ads to households based on their search and viewing habits.
