The Big Issue is gaining a loyal following of readers according to a a recent survey conducted by the paper. Almost 60% of readers questioned had read at least 3 issues in the past 6- months , while 40% of readers said they plan to read every issue in the future.

The survey found that 91% of readers had purchased their copy from a street vendor and 3% from the Body Shop. Only 2.9% had read someone else’s copy. 31% of respondents had read a copy of The Guardian in the last 3 days, 24% the Independent, and 10% the Times. Only 3% had read The Sun, Today and Daily Express. 64% of readers who took part in the survey were themselves employed. 65% were female and 62% between the ages of 25-34.

The Big Issue, which is sold by the homeless in London, Liverpool, Brighton and Milton Keynes, is to change its size from tabloid to A4 and increase its frequency from monthly to fortnightly on August 21. The paper is claiming a current circulation of 230,000 and plans to launch in Glasgow within the next month.
