Yesterday’s World Cup triple bill was a major winner for BBC1, with a peak of more than nine million adults tuning in to see Brazil beat Croatia 1-0.
Despite the Cup holders not showcasing their full footballing prowess, the match drew 36.5% of the adult viewing public, an average of over seven-and-a-half million, compared to Channel 4’s almost 12% for Deal Or No Deal and 18% for Big Brother.
ITV1’s Coronation Street, which was on for the duration of the match preamble, scored more than six-and-a-half million adult viewers, or 36.7% of the adult viewing share at the time.
France and Switzerland’s 0-0 draw peaked at almost six million adult viewers, an average of 35% of the viewing share, while earlier in the day the South Korea v Togo game attracted just over two million adult viewers or 35.5% of adult viewers at the time.
ABC1 Men enjoyed a footy-packed afternoon; an average of nearly two-and-a-half million had their eyes on the Brazil v Croatia match, or 52.5%, while the France v Switzerland game drew almost one-and-a-half million ABC1 Men, or 55% of the group who were watching television at the time.
Less ABC1 Men watched South Korea come from behind to beat Togo 2-1, at just over half a million. However it was 55% of ABC1 Men watching television at the time.
