More than half of the active internet audience in Europe is making a high speed connection, up from just one-third a year ago, says new research from Nielsen//NetRatings.

The internet research group claims the number of people in Europe surfing the internet at high speed from home increased from 34.1 million to 54.5 million, an increase of 60%.

Italy, the UK and France have highest growth rates for the number of active broadband internet users surfing the web at home, with Italy in particular experiencing phenomenal growth, up 120% between November 2003 and October 2004.

According to Nielsen, there are now 100 million home internet users in Europe, an increase of 12% year on year. Germany, the UK, Italy and France all experienced double-digit growth, with France recording the highest increase over the last 12 months, up 16%.
