MediaTel Group hosted its first ever Youth, Media & Technology event in association with Channel 4 yesterday. The first (teenage) panel unveiled some interesting insights about how young people engage with and consume media. There were lots of questions from the floor in what was a lively debate around technology, brands and advertising. Here is a snapshot of what was said…
He is 18, lives in West London and attends a mixed school there, where he is studying Spanish, Economics, Maths and Physics.
“Facebook is free so you expect there to be ads.”
“I never buy a newspaper – I have the BBC website set as my homepage and I get everything I need from there. I wouldn’t buy a newspaper – I can get news for free online and on my phone.”
“All my friends have a Blackberry but I have a Nokia smartphone”.
“Everyone is always on Facebook, even if it’s just on in the background. It is a talking point – people want to be in the know.”
“Music should be free because you can get it for free. But I would be willing to pay for a concert – it’s the experience.”
“I just watch the programmes that I want to watch… not a particular Channel for the brand.”
“I upload YouTube videos to Facebook. I put the new Adidas ad on there – the ad was good and so was the music. I like getting comments and seeing other recommendations”
“I don’t see much point in subscribing to a magazine. I am interested in sport but news is old in magazines. I can get everything up to date online.”
“I couldn’t give up my laptop or my phone.”
“I don’t watch Live TV, ads annoy me… apart from sports and I watch the BBC cos you don’t get any ads.”
