The Evening Standard‘s display advertising sales director, Alan Brydon, has left the newspaper after almost four years in the job.
It is not known if Brydon has a new position to move to, but his name has been linked with plans for the proposed News International freesheet, now registered as thelondonpaper.
NI has appointed a headhunter to recruit a sales director. Martin Bowley, head of media at Kendall Tarrant, is understood to be in talks with potential candidates for the position. Now that Brydon has left the Standard, he could be in the running for the job.
According to industry sources, the new freesheet, which has been tested through focus groups, will be a mixture of London and entertainment news.
In early May, News International was preparing to launch a paper irrespective of whether it wins the contracts for distribution on the London Underground and mainline railway stations.
NI is believed to be confident of winning one or both contracts, but is also looking at distributing the paper outside tube stations, through dump bins on pavements and in coffee shops like Starbucks.
Last month, Network Rail began looking for bids for a publisher to produce and distribute a free afternoon paper at ten of London’s busiest stations (see Bids Wanted For New Commuter Newspaper).
The announcement of Brydon’s replacement is expected shortly.
