Calcutt Defends Press Review

Sir David Calcutt yesterday defended his recommendation that the PCC be replaced by a statutory tribunal. Giving evidence to the Commons National Heritage select committee he said unless there is statutory regulation the press will be given an “endless succession of last chances.” Calcutt explained that his proposal to fine newspapers should only be used in extreme cases and would not stand in the way of investigative journalism.
