Capital Joins AOP To Boost Online Content

Capital Radio has become the latest media owner to join the Association of Online Publishers, bringing its portfolio of internet sites, including CapitalFM.com, Xfm.com, and ChoiceFM.com to the Association, significantly boosting its fledgling membership.

Capital’s internet operations launched in 1996 and now attract more than 662,000 audited unique users per month, generating nearly 6 million page impressions. Its membership of the AOP will enable research and industry knowledge to be shared with other website owners, significantly boosting Capital’s own operations.

The decision to join the AOP brings the radio giant into line with rival online operators such as the BBC, BSkyB, Emap, FT.com, Guardian Unlimited, Haymarket and Times Online, as well as the Association’s most recent new recruit, ITV (see ITV Joins Association of Online Publishers).

Commenting on Capital’s decision to join, Giuseppe Troisi, head of the broadcaster’s interactive division, said: “Our involvement with AOP, the trade body specialising in digital publishing issues, will allow us to make more headway and share learning in areas that are particularly important for us.”

He added: “Streaming and broadband content are crucial; we want to push this onto other publishers’ agenda, and help the market to grow. In the early days, the web was all about words. Now it’s also about video and audio entertainment as much as news. Working through AOP will put us in a better position to drive the industry forward.”

The AOP has been strengthening its ranks and recently, as well as releasing research into the online viewing habits of website users. According to the association’s research, almost 65% of internet users prefer to see online advertising that relates to the content they are viewing, while more than 50% say they pay more attention to advertising on websites they trust, representing a valuable audience for advertisers and media owners alike (see Research Shows Context Is Key For Online Advertising).
