Tony Chambers has been promoted to the position of editor-in-chief of Wallpaper*, the iconic design, fashion and lifestyle magazine.
Chambers is currently a member of the senior editorial team and will take up his new post on 26 March. As the style bible’s creative director, Chambers’ achievements at Wallpaper* include the introduction of a new design direction, creating the brand identity of the Wallpaper* City Guides and the design of 2006’s Wallpaper* 10th anniversary issue.
The publication’s circulation grew steadily in the years following its 1996 launch, before a decline in late 2002. Since then, the magazine’s circulation total has remained fairly static until a year on year rise in its 10th anniversary year. The title now boasts a total ABC of 112,871, up 2.4% from its previous reporting period.
Prior to joining Wallpaper* in 2003, Chambers spent six years as art director of Condé Nast’s GQ, where he twice won PPA Designer of the Year. He was previously art editor of the Sunday Times Magazine and has won a roll call of design honours. Before he embarked upon his career, Chambers graduated from Central St Martin’s School of Art with a First Class Honours degree.
“Tony is a design legend in his own right. Not only is he a world class creative director, he also possesses sharply honed journalistic instincts and an unparalleled knowledge of the pillars of Wallpaper*: design, fashion, art, travel and the zeitgeist,” said publishing director, Fiona Dent.
“These qualities, combined with Tony’s passion for innovation and success, make him the perfect editor-in-chief for Wallpaper*. I can’t wait to work with Tony to take the Wallpaper* brand to even greater heights.”
Chambers added: “Wallpaper* is unquestionably the most influential design magazine in the world and my time as creative director has been absolutely mega.
“I am delighted to be given this opportunity and to continue working with the most talented and creative team of journalists. Onwards and upwards!”
