Channel 4 is to run a week-long 3D series after commissioning UK-made 3D content that can be viewed on standard TV sets.

The broadcaster plans to strip a week of peak-time programming this autumn to air special 3D programmes, such as Derren Brown’s 3D Magic Spectacular and two hour-long The Queen in 3D by Renegade Productions.

Channel 4’s 3D season will also feature a 3D colour news-reel of Coronation Street from 1953 as well as a new 3D film produced by Arena TV at the Garter Ceremony in June.

Production companies such as Renegade and Objective have worked with Channel 4 to produce one-off 3D programmes and films for the series, including Jaws 3D and a 1993 Doctor Who special.

However, the shows will broadcast alongside some classic 3D films, which have been converted to the new format.

David Glover, C4’s science commissioner, said: “Watching period 3D documentary footage is about as close to time travel as one can get. You watch as the crowds wave at the Coronation and you see the young queen walking right past you.”

The broadcaster plans to use technology based on ColorCode 3D glasses, which will be distributed through Sainsbury’s stores a week before the series.

Viewers will be able to watch the 3D content without glasses but it will have a slightly distorted contrast.

Last month, BSkyB announced plans to launch Europe’s first ever 3DTV channelBSkyB announced plans to launch Europe’s first ever 3DTV channel with films, entertainment shows and sports content next year.

However, customers wanting to take up Sky’s new offering will need glasses and a new 3D-ready TV set, which currently costs around £2,500.
