Channel One Launches Today

Channel One, the country’s first city-based television channel launched today. Broadcasting 24-hours a day of rolling news and features to London by cable, Channel One is the first television venture of Associated Newspapers.

Channel One aims to provide “the feel of a local electronic newspaper”. It uses videojournalism, with 30 one man crews on the streets. Associated Chairman Sir David English said today, “Channel One is going to become as integral a part of London as Big Ben. For the first time London will have its very own dedicated television service.”

The schedule will provide fast coverage of news at Breakfast Time, with travel updates and weather. Daytime has a mix of rolling news and magazine shows and late afternoon shows will provide information and reports to help plan travel and entertainment for the evening. All the day’s events in the Capital will be covered. Much of the coverage will be live, aiming for a sense of immediacy, say Channel One.

Channel One is available free to cable subscribers in the London area, giving the channel a potential audience currently of 300,000. The London area is the most heavily cabled in the country, with 40% of the UK cable network.
