Charlie Cox permanently appointed MD of Metro

Charlie Cox has been permanently appointed managing director of Metro following his interim appointment in July, it has been announced.

Cox, who took over after Steve Auckland quit to become the new chief executive of ESI Media earlier this year, has been a senior media executive, director and broadcaster for more than 30 years.

“I am delighted to have my feet even more firmly under the table at Metro,” Cox said.

“I have been so impressed with the team and the inspiring work they do that I couldn’t possibly not stay! I am particularly pleased to be part of a new chapter for Metro, which continues to produce great content and is the UK’s third-largest national newspaper distributed across 50 cities.”

After being head-hunted to take over London radio company LBC in 1990, Cox then went on to set up DMG Radio in 1993. He has also held a parallel career as a broadcaster in live television for the BBC for 17 years, including 12 years as the lead commentator of Moto GP for BBC television. He also wrote columns on motorsport for The Times.

In 2000 Cox was appointed head of mergers and acquisitions at Carphone Warehouse. He spent two years streamlining the group’s operations across Europe and Scandinavia, as well as completing a series of acquisitions for the brand.
