Egmont Expands Magazine Portfolio With Disney Title

Egmont Magazines has announced the launch of Disney Special Collection, targeting boys and girls aged 3-7 years with what it claims is a “highly collectable, quality monthly magazine” featuring some of Disney’s best-loved characters and branded covermounted gifts.

The magazine will have an initial print run of 65,000, with the first issue due to go on sale next week with a cover price of £1.99.

The 36-page title has been split into a series of interactive and educational themes, chosen by the publisher to reflect young Disney fans’ favourite magazine elements. The themes will include Animal World, packed full of fun facts about real-life animals; Make & Do, with tips and arty ideas; Movies, where readers can read about the stars of the latest Disney movies and discover more about their worlds, and Activity Zone, a collection of brain-teasers and activities.

Commenting on the launch, Debbie Cook, publisher of Egmont Magazines, said: “Disney Special Collection has been created as a truly ‘must have’ magazine for Disney fans, following research and focus groups. The magazine includes their favourite characters, plus entertaining lifestyle sections to encourage them to play and learn. While each magazine works on its own, the series will build together to create a classic Disney collection.”

Disney’s publishing manager, Siobhan Geraghty, added: “Egmont’s publishing expertise and unrivalled knowledge of the target market has resulted in a high-quality magazine which offers entertainment and education, plus contains the most important properties for any Disney fan.”

The latest deal continues Egmont’s relationship with Disney. Last year saw the company create a monthly pre-school title called My Disney Favourites, designed to capture the imaginations of children aged between two and five, with each edition dedicated to a different Disney character, in-line with the latest family film and DVD releases (see Egmont Rolls-Out New Pre-School Magazine).

The children’s magazine sector has seen a number of new launches over the last few months as publishers move to cash in on significant rises in both retail and copy sales. Future Publishing also entered the children’s market last year, with the launch of a title called Jetix, based around hit television shows such as Power Rangers, Spider Man and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (see Future Enters Kids Market With Jetix Magazine).
