Emap Appoints Moloney As New Chief Executive

Emap has appointed its chief operating officer, Tom Moloney, as its new chief executive, replacing Robin Miller, who has being doing the job on an interim basis for the last 18 months.

Moloney, who has been at Emap since 1981, is understood to have been in the running for the position since it became available last year. Miller, who took up the position following the departure of Kevin Hand (see EMAP Chief Resigns As Results Come In Line With Expectations), will step down to make way for his successor earlier than expected, at the end of this month.

Moloney is believed to have staved off competition from a number of other high-profile candidates including Emap’s group finance director, Gary Hughes and United Business Media’s chief operating officer, Malcolm Wall. Former Carlton chief executive, Gerry Murphy, was also linked to the position before his departure to Kingfisher in October.

Commenting on the appointment, Emap chairman, Adam Broadbent, said: “We have seen an impressive array of candidates with wide experience in the sector and beyond. Tom’s combination of vision, energy and experience meant that he was our unanimous choice. In the last twelve months he has helped bring stability to Emap and his task now is to lead Emap to greater things in the future.”

According to Moloney: “Emap is one of the UK’s most exciting companies and I look forward to developing the business whilst seeking out fresh opportunities. In the last year Emap has generated real momentum. Emap is on track and well positioned to capitalise on its future plans and ambitions.”
