Europe Leading The World In DTT Growth

A new report from In-Stat has found that Europe is leading the world in the fast-growing digital terrestrial platform (DTT), though other regions are gaining momentum.

In-Stat says that with digital switchover approaching in North America and Western Europe, strong drivers for DTT set-top boxes are on the horizon as consumers move from analogue to digital.

While other regions are further behind the digital curve, actions are being taken to expand digital services; whether it is formally adopting a standard (eg Honduras and ATSC) or anticipating DTT launches (eg Brazil), digital is becoming a global change.

In-Stat found that total unit shipments of DTT set-top boxes will eclipse 47 million in 2011.

In addition, revenue will have a more subdued compound annual growth rate (18.2%) than unit sales growth, in large part, due to decreasing set-top box prices.

Recent research published by Informa Telecoms & Media showed that digital TV penetration of Western European households will break the 50% mark by the end of this year.

The 11th edition of Informa’s Western European TV report forecasts that digital homes in the region will total 135 million by 2012, equivalent to an 86% penetration rate (see European Digital TV Penetration To Break 50% Mark).

Meanwhile, earlier in the year, Ofcom reported that more than 80% of households in the UK now receive digital television services on their primary set, up from more than 77% in the last quarter, with almost 82% of homes receiving multi-channel TV at the end of Q1 2007.

Ofcom’s Digital Progress Report said that more than 20.4 million households now have digital TV equipment connected to their main television, with the success of Freeview largely to thank for this increase (see UK Digital TV Penetration Exceeds 80%).
