Commercial radio is going through a period of rapid change, which is why the theme of Tuning In 2021 is exploring the audio revolution, writes the CEO of Radiocentre

Next week will be my first event since joining Radiocentre as chief executive. Tuning In is returning with the option to attend live in person, or watch virtually via the livestream.

We have a fantastic line up of speakers joining us, including comedy legend John Cleese, one of the UK’s biggest selling artists of the year Tom Grennan and LBC host Rachel Johnson. We would love to welcome you for a morning of audio inspiration, you can book your free spot at the event here.

Commercial radio is going through a period of rapid change and whilst there are some big challenges to overcome we also have plenty of opportunities to look forward to, which is why Tuning In 2021’s theme is exploring the audio revolution.

Nine out of 10 adults are listening to the radio every single week, that’s considerably higher than both podcast and streaming figures. In an ever changing audio market, radio is still dominant. At Tuning In we’ll explore why that’s the case and how it can continue to be the constant bedrock of listening in an audio revolution.

The stats show that radio still plays an important role in our lives, and that rings true for popstars. Following his number one album in March, British music artist Tom Grennan will be discussing why radio is still important to a successful music career. Equally, millions of young people are tuning in to youth brands like KISS and Capital, and we will be hearing from presenters and stars of Diversity, Jordan and Perri, along with influencer turned radio host Elz the Witch to discuss how radio is still resonating with younger audiences.

We’ll also be looking into the past in order to improve for the future, with a preview of our new research study Big Audio Datamine, which will use vast amounts of data to analyse what makes for an effective campaign.  With a meta-analysis of more than 1000 radio campaign effectiveness studies, this study aims to provide agencies and advertisers with new insight and tools that will help inform decisions and optimise campaign results within the audio universe.

It is important for the future health of both radio and advertising that we continue to look ahead and utilise technology to stay ahead of the competition. So I’m excited to hear from CEO of Say It Now, Charlie Cadbury at Tuning In, he will be exploring the future of voice monetisation and how closing the loop on audio to purchase will be a game changer for audio advertising. We will also welcome legendary Australian advertising creative Ralph Van Djik. Ralph will provide some creative inspiration, based on some of the most unique uses of audio from around the world.

Radio and advertising are both incredibly creative mediums, we rely on these skills to make brilliant content that audiences engage with, which is why we are very excited to welcome comic legend John Cleese to the Tuning In stage. John will be using his illustrious career to draw top tips for being creative in the work place.

We will also be hearing from a creative that many in radio will be familiar with, poet Hussain Manawer. Hussain wrote the 2021 Mental Health Minute which was broadcast on every UK radio station earlier this year. He will be talking about why radio was the right medium for this highly intimate and personal message.

Those who follow closely the policy and regulatory debate will particularly enjoy LBC host and journalist Rachel Johnson. It is always important to have an understanding of the political landscape which sets the parameters of the world in which we operate in, so Rachel will be providing an overview of that landscape with a focus on the future of media and advertising.

There are plenty of other sessions exploring the audio, advertising and political worlds, so Tuning In will be an opportunity for brands, agencies, audio professionals and policy makers to come together and explore the audio revolution.

There are a limited number of places to attend in person and the event will be livestreamed. More sessions will be announced later this week. Book your free place now at www.radiocentre.org/tuningin.
