The Express has launched its first dedicated “.com” website in the US as part of publisher Reach’s plan to expand into the American market.
Since January, Reach properties the Express, Mirror, and Irish Star have been building up its US content and audience reach.
This marks the first time, however, that the Express‘s audience has been given its own digital home separate from its “.co.uk” site.
Reach launched IrishStar.com earlier this year and intends to launch a new US site for the Mirror later this summer.
British Invasion: why 2023 is the right time for Reach’s US launch
A launch team of UK-based journalists from the Express UK and other Reach titles have been seconded to Reach’s New York City office space. Currently, the Express US site, the-express.com, is being staffed by a team of approximately 50 individuals across both the US and UK, with ongoing editorial recruitment now being focused on American candidates.
“It’s brilliant to see all of the team’s hard work resulting in this important milestone,” said group editor-in-chief Lloyd Embley. “With its proudly mainstream news agenda, including covering the worlds of showbiz, royals, TV, tech, travel and sport as well as centre-right politics, we know there’s a huge appetite for Express content in the US. We are excited about meeting this need and growing a significant new audience.”
Early stories from the US site indeed appear angled toward a conservative slant, in keeping with its UK counterpart. They include an exclusive interview with former President Trump’s national security advisor John Bolton and several comment pieces from former Ronald Reagan aide Peggy Grande.
Apart from Embley, the US Express site is being overseen by digital editorial director Liz Hazelton and led by US editor Karl Holbrook.
