Facebook adds #hashtag feature

Facebook has announced that clickable hashtags will now be available across its platforms.

Similar to social media peers such as Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr that all integrate the hashtag feature, Facebook hashtags will allow users to add context to a post or indicate that it is part of a larger discussion.

When a Facebook hashtag is clicked on, users will see a feed of what other people and pages are saying about that event or topic.

With the new feature, users can now search for a specific hastag from the search bar, click on hashtags that originate from other services (such as Instagram) and compose posts directly from the hashtag feed and search results.

However, users – which have declined significantly over recent months – will still be able to limit who can see the hashtagged posts.

“Hashtags are just the first step to help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic and participate in conversations,” a spokesperson for Facebook said on its news site.

“We’ll continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months, including trending hashtags and deeper insights, that help people discover more of the world’s conversations.”
