An online campaign is being launched by Facebook to celebrate reaching 500 million global users. This means that one in every twelve people in the world now has a Facebook account.
Facebook have chosen a TV interview in America to mark the occasion, with Mark Zuckerberg being interviewed by Diane Sawyer this Wednesday at 18.30 ET (22.30 GMT), on ABC News. Not only this, but Facebook is introducing “Facebook Stories”.
These consist of users submitting their own stories, keeping within the character limit of a Facebook status (420 characters), describing how Facebook has made an important impact on their lives. If people ‘like’ particular stories, then they become popular, and these are the stories that will be featured.
“As we anticipated our 500 million milestone, we wanted to find a different way to announce and celebrate it”, said Facebook marketing director Randi Zuckerberg. “In the past, it’s been all about the numbers and milestones, and we realised we had never taken the opportunity to celebrate users.”
Recent figures taken from Google’s AdPlanner explain more, putting Facebook at 540 million users each month with 630 billion page views. That means a 34.8% reach of the world’s internet population, with an average 34 visits per month of 23 minutes in total.
