Few Mobile Users Interested In Mobile Payments

Only around 13% of European mobile users are interested in using their phones to make payments for services, according to a report by Forrester Research.

A survey of mobile users across twenty European countries found that only 13% of users claim to be likely or very like to use mobile payment services if they were available. The majority of 60% say that they are extremely unlikely to use such services. Nevertheless, interest in mobile payment is still slightly higher than the 10% of users recorded at the beginning of 2001.

Of those consumers that do express an interest in mobile phone payments, the bias is heavily towards young, wealthy, high-income technology optimists. However, even this enthusiastic group will only maintain an interest in mobile payment technology – and pass on their experience to other, less tech-savvy consumers – if the system proves useful to them.

Of those services which consumers might like to pay for with their mobile phones, car parking currently appears to be the most popular, as shown.
