Football League Rejection Could Close ITV Digital
ITV Digital could face imminent closure if a lower offer for media rights is not accepted by the Football League today, according to reports in today’s national press.
The troubled digital TV platform was meant to pay around £180m over for the rights to screen Nationwide League football games, but now, faced with financial pressure, it is thought to be offering £50m.
Such a drop in revenue from the media rights sale could cause financial difficulties for many of the 72 football clubs in the League. However, if ITV Digital, which recently appointed Deloitte & Touche to “restructure” third party deals including this one (see ITV Digital To Restructure; Merger Talks Revived?), goes under, the clubs could lose out completely.
