Freeview Has Best Christmas Ever

Freeview Television Freeview has revealed that Christmas 2006 was its best ever, with more than two million digital boxes and TVs sold during the quarter.

Freeview has experienced strong takeup since its launch in October 2002, with 15 million sales since it emerged on the market.

The fourth quarter of 2006 saw strong Freeview sales across all products, including digital boxes, digital televisions, and digital TV recorders – where sales have almost doubled year on year.

Freeview Playback is to be launched soon, a new digital TV recorder brand intended to give consumers greater flexibility with their viewing and recording (see Freeview Playback To Be Widely Available By Next Summer).

Cary Wakefield, Freeview general manager, said: “We’ve enjoyed our most successful Christmas ever and are delighted to confirm our continued popularity.

“With two million sales since Ofcom’s last report, which put Freeview in 9.3 million homes, we’re well on our way to becoming the nation’s favourite way to watch TV.”

A recent report from JupiterResearch said that Freeview is set to be the digital switchover ‘winner’ in the coming years, with pay-TV companies set for a struggle to win customers (see Freeview To Be Digital Switchover Winner).
