GCap Backtracks To Give Laverne Xfm Breakfast

Lauren Laverne GCap’s London-based indie station Xfm has backtracked on its denials yesterday that drivetime host Lauren Laverne is to scoop its high profile Breakfast Show, confirming this morning that she will succeed outgoing Christian O’Connell within weeks.

The move will make Laverne the Capital’s only female breakfast host, as station newcomer Lucio takes the reigns of her drivetime show.

Commenting on her appointment, Laverne said: “I’m so happy and excited to be given such an amazing show on the best radio station currently broadcasting. We’re so lucky to have the best music and the best listeners. I know Christian has had a fantastic time with both over the last few years and I intend to follow in his footsteps, albeit in stilettos.”

The battle for Xfm’s breakfast job has been widely speculated upon, following O’Connell’s defection to rival Virgin earlier this year (see Virgin Signs O’Connell As New Breakfast Host). However, while many believed Lucio may land the top job, Xfm programme controller Andy Ashton explained: “Lauren was always our number one choice to take over from Christian. In a market full of lads it’s going to be fantastic for Xfm to have a completely unique position at breakfast, hosted by a classy lady who has all the credentials to take the Xfm breakfast show to a new level.

“Lucio at drive time is a natural successor. He is someone who completely understands radio and like Lauren, is a natural talent. He sounds completely at home on the mighty Xfm, and I can’t wait to unleash him on London’s drive home. He has proved an incredibly popular addition to our ranks and I’m convinced he is going to be a major player. Both shows are aimed at refocusing on what Xfm is great at, being passionate about new music and connecting to like minded people.”

O’Connell is expected to take control of Virgin’s breakfast slot towards the end of the year, following the departure of long-serving DJs Pete and Geoff, who will remain with the station but host a show later in the day (see Pete & Geoff Step Down From Virgin Breakfast).
