Global Broadband Subscribers To Increase

Broadband will reach almost half a billion subscribers by 2011, according to a new report from ABI Research.

ABI says that broadband internet access is gradually becoming a defining characteristic of advanced industrialised economies, and broadband take rates have been increasing at a rapid pace across the world.

The latest update to ABI Research’s online broadband subscribers database forecasts that the total number of DSL and cable broadband users in the world will grow by an average of 9% annually over the next five years to reach 480 million subscribers by 2012.

Serene Fong, broadband research analyst at ABI Research’s Asia Bureau, said: “The Asia-Pacific region offers a potentially huge market to tap into.

“In terms of statistical benchmarking, the subscriber base in the Asia-Pacific region will grow substantially over the next five years, and is expected to outperform other areas. Much of the Asia-Pacific growth is expected to be fuelled by the flourishing Chinese broadband market.”

Broadband DSL will continue to be the fastest growing sector in the industry, as opposed to cable broadband, says ABI.

Asia-Pacific research director and general manager Jake Saunders said: “DSL is set for stronger growth than cable across the globe mainly because it is able to leverage existing telecommunications infrastructure, leading to lower prices and greater ease of deployment.”

A recent report from Point Topic said that the number of broadband lines in the UK reached 13.1 million by the end of 2006 by adding more than 3.1 million new lines in the year (see UK Broadband Lines Reach 13.1 Million).

Meanwhile, a report from The Diffusion Group (TDG), said that the number of broadband enabled TVs is expected to exceed 162 million households globally by 2011 (see Broadband Enabled TVs To Exceed 162 Million)
