GMG Radio Sees Unprecidented Growth In Regions

GMG Radio has announced unprecidented ratings for its regional stations, securing the number one and two spots in Scotland and Wales respectively with their local Real Radio stations.

The achievement was revealed in the latest RAJAR audience data for the period ending December 2003 and gives Real Radio a bigger than ever slice of the regional broadcasting market.

The media minnow’s victory was made sweeter still by pipping more established rivals such as Galaxy and Century to the top spot, despite having operated for only two years in Scotland and three years in Wales.

The Scottish station continues to enjoy its status as the most listened to station in Scotland, while its Welsh counterpart now attracts more listners than any other commercial radio station.

Commenting on the company’s recent flush of success GMG Radio’s group operations director, Shaun Bowron, said: “Radio is becoming more and more competitive and market share is key to success in the commercial sector. We are delighted that two of our stations are now the top two regional stations in the UK.”

GMG recently lost out on a bid for an FM licence to broadcast its Jazz FM station in the West Midlands. Instead the Radio Authority awarded the license to Emap’s alternative rock station, Kerrang! Radio (see Kerrang! To Rock West Midlands).
