Google Increases Grip On UK Online Adspend

Google accounted for 43% of the £2 billion spent by marketers on online advertising last year, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB).

Last year, Google made $1.6 billion (£872 million) in the UK, which is around 43% of the £2 billion spent last year by UK marketers.

In 2005, Google’s $878 million UK revenues saw it account for 35% of the £1.3 billion spent on online marketing.

In the paid-for search market Google accounted for 75% of the £1.2 billion spent in the UK in 2006.

This was up from 2005 when the UK paid-for search market was worth £768.4 million, with Google accounting for 63% of that figure.

Yesterday, new figures from the IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers revealed that UK internet advertising expenditure grew 41% in 2006, breaking the £2 billion barrier.

Last week, Google bought in-game advertising firm Adscape in a deal rumoured to be worth around £23 million.
