HomeChoice Boosts Broadband To Fight Competition

Broadband internet and on-demand TV provider HomeChoice has announced upgrades to customers’ broadband connections across the board, making its services more competitive in the light of recent on-demand TV launches by rivals Telewest and ntl.

HomeChoice parent company, Video Networks Ltd, has announced that all three tiers of its broadband internet services will receive a speed boost at no extra cost to customers from 1 February. The new HomeChoice internet speeds will give 512Kb customers a connection at up to 1Mb, while 1Mb customers will receive up to 2Mb and 2Mb customers will see their connection accelerate to 4Mb.

HomeChoice’s internet services will continue to be packaged with digital TV, video-on-demand and free evening and weekend phone calls, all through customers’ conventional home phone socket.

Commenting on the move, Roger Lynch, chairman and CEO of Video Networks, said: “The HomeChoice Internet upgrades demonstrate the strength of our network and our commitment to the internet market in addition to our digital TV, video-on-demand and telephony services. Video Networks is constantly looking for ways it can enhance its current suite of services to continue to provide a superb customer experience.”

The new Internet services will allow HomeChoice users to enjoy faster file download speeds, make it easier to keep up with the latest music and movie files and will enable superior online gaming.

Existing customers will be notified of the automatic upgrades from 24 January via direct mail. In addition, new customers will also be eligible to take advantage of the faster broadband speeds when they sign up.

The move is sure to make HomeChoice a more competitive force in the broadband and digital TV markets, with customers treated to the UK’s most established video-on-demand service and, with the latest speed increases, some of the fastest internet connections currently available.

Cable broadband and TV providers Telewest and ntl recently launched their first video-on-demand services, allowing customers in Bristol and Glasgow to access content at will from their remote control. The services are the only real rivals to HomeChoice, which provides customers within the London area with a range of films and television programmes at the push of a button (see Cable Giants Launch On-Demand TV And Movie Services).

HomeChoice recently announced a programme of expansion covering an additional 100,000 homes across London and the south-east, marking the company’s first venture outside the M25. The work to deliver its content to a wider audience is due to be completed by the end of this month (see HomeChoice Boosts Coverage To Customers Outside London).
