IKEA Facebook campaign shows the power of social networks

IKEA is basking in the success of a viral marketing campaign on Facebook using one of the site’s most basic features, helping to promote the opening of a new store.

Agency Forsman &
Bodenfors created a Facebook profile for the manager of the store, Gordon Gustavsson, with the site’s users encourage to add him as a friend.

Over a two week period, several photos of the store were added to Gustavsson’s profile with users invited to tag their names onto products in the pictures. The first people to add tags won the product.

It was a massive success, with users requesting new photos so they could win more products.

Part of the success came as, with users tagging the products, news of their actions appeared in friends’ news feeds and updates.
