Internet Usage And Downloads Via Mobile Phones Up

WAP Phone A total of 13.2 million people used their mobile phones for downloads and browsing the internet in the UK during July 2006, according to figures released by the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

Britain’s growing usage is in line with an upward global trend, and the MDA has identified the top ten types of pages that were most accessed across the UK during the month.

Google comes out on top, followed by chat sites, WAP directories, other search sites like Yahoo! and the BBC. Ringtones/wallpapers and games sites were also popular with consumers, whilst mobile entertainment sites, MSN, mobile communities and shopping sites like eBay also made it on to the list.

According to the data, users appear to be accessing mobile versions of the most popular internet sites. There is also a growing number of “mobile community” websites appearing for use on mobile handsets, where users can create their own web pages. The UK’s increasing passion for blogging and sharing information looks set to increase via the mobile internet.
