The BBC’s iPlayer had a record month in October with 53.2 million requests for TV programmes.

According to new BBC figures, 76% of people accessing the catch-up TV service were doing so via their PCs.

However, 7% wanted to watch from their iPhones or iTouch, 7% from a Mac and 6% from a PlayStation 3.  The remaining 2% of viewing was via a Wii or other mobile devices.

The data also shows that 26% of iPlayer programmes were watched via Virgin Media, which enables viewers to watch shows on their television sets.

The BBC is reportedly planning to launch an iPlayer app specifically for the iPhone, which would work via a WiFi connection.  At the moment, iPhone users can only access the iPlayer via an internet connection.

In June, the BBC released an iPlayer app for a range of Nokia smartphones.
