ITC Issues Response To Green Paper

ITC Issues Response To Green Paper

The Independent Television Commission today issued its response to the Green Paper on the Future of the BBC. The report advises;

  • Advertising, sponsorship and subscription on the BBC would have serious adverse consequences for the development of commercially-funded television
  • The BBC’s commercial activities should be limited to turning its broadcasting assets to account
  • A “Public Service Broadcasting Council” would reduce rather than protect choice
  • The BBC should aim to provide television services which achieve a wide reach, as a measure of its performance

Chairman of the ITC, Sir George Russell, comments; “For the foreseeable future, we will need the contribution made by the BBC, based on the reach of its programmes to complement the range provided by commercial television”.
