A little over a month since newspaper publishers served notice on the National Readership Survey as they seek a contemporary audience measurement system, Jed Glanvill, a former CEO of Mindshare, has been announced as the project lead to oversee the review.
Initially for a six month period, Glanvill will chair an advisory group, which will agree the brief for a “future-proof cross-platform measurement system” and approve the appointment of the research providers.
Starting on 1 September, one of his first tasks will be to recruit the advisory group, which will be made up of members from the IPA, PPA and the NPA. He will also consult with the National Readership Survey to “establish the best way forward”.
Glanvill, who has over 20 years’ experience in media, was previously deputy chairman of the IPA’s Media Futures Group in his capacity as CEO of a top ten media agency.
“I think that now is the time to grab the opportunity,” said Glanvill “I look forward to working with the industry to establish the universally sought after improved measurement system.”
Rufus Olins, CEO of Newsworks, the marketing body for the newspaper industry, added: “Jed is a seasoned leader with a hands-on approach and a practical understanding of the role audience research plays for media owners and agencies. The industry is fortunate to be able to draw on his experience and relationships.”
Writing for Newsline after the original announcement was made, the NRS’s newly appointed CEO, Simon Redican, said he was ready for the challenge facing the body.
“I believe that the best solution for industry audience measurement must work for all three stakeholders in NRS – newspapers, magazines and agencies who represent their clients, the paying customers.
“Therein lies the strength of a JIC and it gives me confidence that the NRS is uniquely placed to deliver a solution which works for all parties and is underpinned by that most precious of commodities – trust. I relish the challenge of leading our response.”
Mediatique, the strategic advisory firm, will work alongside Glanvill. The firm is run by Mathew Horsman, former equities analyst at Investec and one-time media editor of The Independent.
