Jul-Dec NRS Commentary

Jul-Dec NRS Commentary

The six-monthly NRS figures for July to December 1992 are the first to be collected using only the CAPI method. Direct comparisons with previous NRS figures are discouraged as the CAPI method varies greatly from the old Pen and Paper method.

National Newspapers

The July to December ’92 NRS figures favoured the national newspapers with virtually all titles recording higher readerships than for April to September. The Sun rose back above the 10m mark with a readership of 10,114,000, 2m ahead of its nearest competitor The Daily Mirror, which recorded a figure of 8,022,000. Among the quality dailies The Guardian fared well recording a figure of 1,483,000, way above The Times‘ readership of 1,137,000.

Women’s Magazines

Bauer dominates the top of the women’s weeklies readership table with Bella recording the highest figure, 3,504,000, and Take A Break the third highest, 3,208,000. Woman’s Own recorded a readership of 3,321,000, midway between the Bauer titles. Hello! continues to be a success story with its July to December readership rising above 1.5m. Its first ever readership stood at 252,000 for the period July to December’88. The Lady returned to the NRS after a gap of two years with a figure of 283,000.

Among the women’s monthlies New Woman recorded an encouraging readership figure of 627,000, considerably higher than in previous periods. Prima and Good Housekeeping again achieved the highest readerships of all the women’s monthlies – both above the 2m mark.

General Magazines

The TV listings titles continue to record the highest readerships of the general weeklies. The Radio Times leads the field with a figure of 5,811,000, followed by the TV Times with a figure of 5,259,000. Among the monthlies Sky fares well with the third highest readership at 1,361,000. The motoring magazines recorded healthy readerships with Classic & Sportscar, Custom Car, Car and Performance Car all featuring in the top quarter of the readership table.
