The latest version of Amazon’s Kindle is the best-selling product in the site’s history, even topping sales of the final book in the Harry Potter series.
Amazon has not confirmed how many of the e-reading devices have been sold but analysts predict 2010 sales will be in the region of eight million, according to MediaPost.
The online retailer said it maintained strong pre-Christmas sales despite competition from the Apple’s iPad and other tablet devices.
The new-look Kindle was heavily marketed in the run up to the festive season, with TV ads starting as early as September to promote the device’s new eInk screen, which reportedly performs better in bright sunlight than the reflective LCD screen on the iPad.
Amazon is now selling a 6″ display Wi-Fi Kindle for £111.00 with free delivery in the UK.
On Amazon’s peak shopping day (29 November), customers ordered more than 13.7 million items worldwide, with a record pace of 158 items per second. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was the top-selling e-book for the Kindle.
The number of Kindle books also outsold the number of ‘real’ books sold last Christmas.
