Mail Online Most Visited Newspaper Site In May

Man Online The Daily Mail’s online presence has become the most visited national newspaper website in May. According to figures released by ABCe over 18.7 million unique users viewed the website over the month.

This is the first time the Associated Newspaper’s website has come out ahead of its rivals, which are also audited monthly by the industry body. In 12 months the website has close to doubled its audience, with a 100% increase compared to the 9.4 million users Mail Online was pulling in this time last year.

Although coming in second place, Telegraph.co.uk has had more success increasing its popularity over the last year. The website’s users has nearly trebled since June 2007 from seven million people logging on to an impressive 18.5 million. This meteoric rise has recently led to suspicion in the industry over the methodology in which the data is collected.

Guardian.co.uk’s dominance in its field suddenly came to an end in March and is now only the third most popular website. The audience has not dropped dramatically in recent months, however the recent surge by Mail Online and Telegraph.co.uk, coupled with loosing over a million users has made the difference to the site’s current placing.

After a slight fall in users in April, Times Online seems to be stabilising around the 16 million mark, making it the fourth most popular site. The Times’ website has been steadily gaining popularity over the past year.

Sun Online’s popularity continues with a slight increase totalling nearly 15 million unique users. Although near the bottom of the pile in terms of unique users, The Sun’s page impressions have reached an all time high of 275 million. This is nearly 100 million more pages than its closest rival Guardian.co.uk.

Mirror Online had a slight rise of 600,000 new users, bringing its total audience to nearly five million people. This is only the third month Mirror Group has reported figures for its website (see Telegraph.co.uk Most Visited National Newspaper Site In April).

*ABCe defines Unique User as “The total number of unique combinations of a valid identifier, Sites may use (i)IP+UserAgent, (ii) Cookie and/or (iii) Registration ID.” Note that where USERS are allocated IP addresses dynamically (for example by dial-up Internet Service Providers), this definition may overstate or understate the real number of individual USERS concerned.
