Mobile Device Shipments Surge In Third Quarter

The number of mobile devices shipped in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region has more than doubled in the past year, reports eMarketer.

Shipments increased from 578,600 in the third quarter of 2001 to 1.17 million in the same period this year, according to research by Canalys. This can largely be attributed to the growth in sales of the Nokia 7650 which has MMS functionality and an integrated digital camera.

Many European operators still do not have MMS services in operation and another rise is therefore expected in Q4. The handheld sector is also showing signs of recovery after experiencing 13% growth in the third quarter this year.
