Mobile TV Fragmentation Here To Stay

A new report from high-tech market research firm In-Stat says that the fragmentation of mobile TV broadcasting is here to stay.

In digital mobile TV broadcasting, several standards are being used, several mainly in one country, and that situation is likely to continue in the future, said In-Stat.

The most popular mobile TV broadcast services are those that are offered without a subscription, as in Japan and South Korea. However, mobile TV broadcast services are viewed by many as a way to generate revenue, so many of the mobile TV broadcast services will be subscription-based.

DVB-H is the most widely used digital mobile TV broadcast standard, in terms of number of operators having launched services.

Analogue mobile TV broadcast viewers will outpace digital mobile TV broadcast viewers and subscribers in 2009, while worldwide mobile TV broadcast subscription revenue is forecast to reach US$12 billion in 2012.

A recent forecast from ABI Research predicted that the total number of mobile TV subscribers will reach 462 million over the next five years (see Mobile TV Subscribers To Number 462m By 2012).

Valista, a provider of multi-channel merchandising, payments and settlement solutions, found that 36% within the mobile industry believe there are significant opportunities in mobile advertising (see Significant Opportunities In Mobile Advertising).
