New statistics from market intelligence firm Juniper Research predict worldwide mobile television revenues to increase rapidly before the end of the decade, peaking at $7.6 billion in 2010, up from an estimated $136 million this year.
However, Juniper is careful to point out the numerous technological hurdles. not least within spectrum availability, which are “likely to retard growth of television via DVB-H, DMB and MediaFLO” until late in the decade.
Once these hurdles are overcome, the research firm states, it is probable that revenues from the new technology will overtake those generated by 3G TV services, with standards such as DVB-h and DMB expected to be the top earning mobile TV medium by 2012 at the latest.
Juniper’s research also states that, given its near ubiquity, DVB-H will gradually establish itself as the most popular broadcast TV standard by 2010, passing the 10 million subscriber mark by the end of the decade.
