National Newspaper NRS Round-Up – April 2001

Readership of national newspapers dropped by well over a million in total, or 2.1% year on year for the period November-April 2001, according to the latest figures from the NRS.

Worst hit was the Daily Express, which dropped nearly half a million to just over 2m, a fall of 19.3% compared to the same period last year. The Guardian’s readership slipped below the 1m mark, with a 162,000 loss representing a 14.1% decrease. Fellow broadsheet the Independent on Sunday, which recently lost high profile editor Janet Street-Porter, fell 16%, or over 100,000 readers year on year.

Sister paper, the Independent had a better time during this period, registering an increase in readership of 7.3%, its 41,000 year on year boost taking it to 600,000. The Financial Times put on a similar show, again increasing by 41,000, which meant a 7.1% increase to 616,000.
