NRS figures for the six-month period ending August 2000 show a continuing decline in national newspaper readership. A 4.1% drop was recorded overall, with most titles reporting a drop in reader numbers in a year on year analysis.
The worst fall came from the Times, which has seen a steep decline in its readership since its revamp earlier this year (see Newsline Brief). It fell by almost 15%. The Daily Telegraph also suffered, down 8%, and its sister paper the Sunday Telegraph fared badly, losing 6% of its readers during the period.
Other broadsheet titles did well, however, with the Independent showing the greatest overall increase (up 13%). Readership of the Financial Times also continued its ascent, with an increase of almost 9% across the period.
