National Newspaper NRS Round-Up – June 2001
The NRS figures for the six month period ending June 2001 show national newspaper readership continues to decline. The sector overall was down 3% compared with the same period last year, with all but six titles losing readership.
The Daily Express continued to see its readership decline, seeing the largest percentage drop, with readership down 20.9% and the greatest year on year loss in terms of actual readership- over 0.5m, to bring the total readership down to 966,000. The Independent On Sunday also fared badly with readership down 16% or 123,000 to 647,000. The Sunday People continued to suffer, losing just over 0.5m readers, leaving total readership at 3,095,000, a loss of 14%.
Of the titles that saw readership improve the Daily Star saw the most significant increase with readership climbing 6.7% or 97,000 to 1,555,000. The Sunday Telegraph also saw an improvement upping readership by 3.5% or 69,000 bringing it to just above the 2m mark.
