Netflix could exceed 40 million streaming subscribers by 2015, according to BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield.

Writing on the Netflix blog, Greenfield noted several reasons for his assertion – up nine million from the current figure – including a ‘growing stable’ of original programming, such as House of Cards.

At $7.99 per month (£5.99 in the UK), Netflix is approximately half of rival HBO’s retail price, which Greenfield notes is also driving Netflix subscription figures, alongside the “rapid escalation in personal entertainment media devices and the acceleration in the penetration of IP-enabled/connected televisions”.

In April, Netflix released its ‘Long Term View’ statement, in which it said: “As Internet TV grows from millions to billions, Netflix, HBO and ESPN are leading the way”.

In the recently updated version, this has changed to: “As internet TV grows from millions to billions, Netflix is leading the way”.

The latest Nielsen Data Report for July 2013 reveals that Netflix’s UK audience was up 11% month on month in the UK, knocking both Vimeo and ITV Player down two spots.

Netflix currently boasts 1.5 million UK subscribers.
