Website Review: Mini.co.uk
Okay, I’ll declare my hand, I love Minis. I tend to let the side down generally by identifying cars by their badges or colours in “typical girl” fashion, rather than understanding torque etc. Minis are great in this respect because they are just one cute handbag of a car.
I loved the ancient royal blue one my mum used for the school run, but I’m not a purist when it comes to the new model. Not really a car fan, the idea of a Mini which is less likely to end up like a squashed tin can if you bash the odd lamp post, with the additional cachet and quality of BMW behind it, is one that attracts me.
Visiting the new Mini website (Top Gear territory. Another section allows you to design your own model, which involves far more colour schemes and interiors than engine capacity. From here you’re invited to use the “find your nearest dealership” facility.
Ubiquitous features of the site included the silly game (online air hockey with Minis instead of sticks), the screensaver and the merchandise. Here I was baffled. Of course I understand the importance of accessorising, but Mini sunglasses, desktop photoframes and pen sets? What’s that all about?
The downside was that while the site trys to be cute, young and funky, it is somehow a little bit too sensible and oh….so…..slow to download. If it hadn’t been for the fact that I really wanted to see what a Mini Cooper withChillii Red bodywork, white roof and black interior looked like, I would have given up before the first set of paint options downloaded.
As it is I’m now wondering: a) As a commuter living five minutes from the station and town centre, can I justify having a car… and b) Who I can get to give me 12 grand….
