North American Broadband Population Set To Top 20 Million

There are now more than 18 million residential broadband subscribers in North America, according to new figures from research firm Kinetic Strategies.

It is estimated that 1.9 million new subscribers were added in the third quarter to take the total to 18.08 million. Of these, 15 million are based in the US where broadband internet usage has practically tripled in the last two-and-a-half years (see US Broadband Hits 28% Penetration, DSL Makes Inroad On Cable).

Cable remains the most popular means of access, accounting for 11.9 million subscriptions in North America while 6.1 million homes have DSL subscriptions.

Kinetic Strategies predicts that the total number of high-speed internet subscribers in the US and Canada will have exceeded 20 million by the end of 2002.
