NRS national newspaper round-up: July 2012 – June 2013

The latest NRS findings for the national newspaper market reveal that the Financial Times and Sunday Times were the only titles to see any readership growth across the year, as the first-time findings for the Sun (Sunday) show a loss of 314,000 readers.

Daily titles

The Daily Telegraph led the quality market between July 2012 and June 2013 despite being down -2.8% and losing an average of 39,000 readers.

While the Financial Times saw a 1.7% lift in readership (the only title to experience an increase across the dailies), the Independent and Guardian suffered huge losses – down -26.1% (140,000) and -13.5% (146,000), respectively.

In the mid market, the Daily Mail was down 87,000 readers (-2%), while the Daily Express lost over double that at 181,000 (-13.9%).

The popular market proved to be even bleaker, with all four titles experiencing significant declines in print readership.

The Sun lost an average of 809,000 readers, followed by the Daily Mirror at 403,000.

Out of the popular market titles, the Daily Star lost the largest chunk of its readers – declining by -15.8%.

Sunday titles

The Sunday Times continued to lead the quality market – this time seeing an increase in readership at 0.2% (5,000), compared to last period’s -5.3%.

The Independent on Sunday lost the most readers by percentage (-12.1%), however it was the Observer that suffered the most, shedding 110,000 readers.

In the mid market, the Sunday Express suffered an even greater loss than its daily counterpart, declining in readership by -22.1% and losing 313,000 readers. The Mail on Sunday lost 285,000 raeders (-5.8%).

The popular market brought even greater losses still, with the Sunday Mirror shedding a huge 1.1 million readers – down -29%.

The Sunday People and Daily Star Sunday were down -37.1% and -23.8%, respectively, while the Sun (Sunday) – reported in the NRS findings for the first time – saw a significantly smaller percentage decline in readers at just -5% but still shedding a considerable 314,000 readers.
